Powerlifting: Nworgu wins Nigeria’s second gold at African Open, sets two world records

Esther Nworgu has won another gold medal for Nigeria at the African Powerlifting Open Championships in Cairo, Egypt.

She claimed gold today in the women’s up to 41kg category to take her country’s gold count to two.

Nworgu put up a stunning performance, breaking the world record not just once but twice.

She first broke the world record with a lift of 112kg but was not done yet. She extended the record further by going for and successfully lifting 114kg.

The previous world record was held by China’s Lingling Guo.

Helen Wawira Kariuki of Kenya won silver, while Egypt’s Enas Elgebaly bagged bronze.

Nworgu joined Roland Ezuruike in winning gold for Nigeria at the championships.

Competing in the men’s up to 54kg category yesterday, Ezuruike won the gold medal and set Legends and African records with a lift of 172kg.
