China gifts Nigerian navy 46 mt gunboat to combat oil theft

THE People’s Republic of China yesterday handed over a 46-meter gunboat and other military equipment to the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Army, giving the fight against crude oil theft a significant boost.

This donation is a part of Nigeria and China’s bilateral relationship.

The minister of defense, Major-General Bashir Salihi Magashi (retd), said during the official handover ceremony in Lagos that the gesture was in line with the federal government’s current efforts to support the military in battling insecurity and that it had been effective and producing outstanding results.

The minister explained that the capabilities of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria would be enhanced by assistance and donations of tools and platforms from partners like the People’s Republic of China.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, also spoke during the event and commended China for its years of support in building up the Nigerian Navy’s capabilities and expanding its maritime presence.
