EPL: Ndidi benched, Iheanacho can’t rescue Leicester as Man City go top

Wilfred Ndidi was an unused substitute while Kelechi Iheanacho was on for the final 20 minutes today for Leicester City in their 1-0 Premier League defeat to Manchester City.

With the victory at the King Power Stadium, champions Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League, at least until Arsenal host Nottingham Forest tomorrow.

Kevin de Bruyne’s world-class free-kick broke down Leicester City’s stubborn resistance to secure the three points for Manchester City.

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers set up his team to contain the champions and prevent a fourth straight defeat to Pep Guardiola’s side and it worked in the first half.

Without the league’s injured top scorer Erling Haaland, Manchester City struggled but they found the breakthrough early in the second half.

De Bruyne curled a superb strike into the top corner from 25 yards in the 49th minute to give the champions the lead they would feel their dominance deserved.

Leicester became more offensive after going behind and they almost levelled up when Youri Tielemans hit a volley from a corner that was turned on to the bar by Manchester City keeper Ederson.

Super Eagles forward Iheanacho was brought on in the 71st minute and he was one of the Leicester stars who caused Manchester City problems, although they could not rescue at least a point.

The Foxes have now lost their last four home games to Manchester City without scoring.

Nigeria midfielder Ndidi was on the bench after returning from an injury lay-off, but he was not given any minutes by Rodgers.

The result ended Leicester City’s mini-run of two back-to-back victories that took them off the bottom of the table to 17th spot.
