Osimhen hits first Serie A hat-trick as Napoli trounce Sassuolo

Victor Osimhen was the star of the show in Naples today as Napoli defeated Sassuolo 4-0 to extend their lead on top of the Serie A table to six points.

The Super Eagles striker scored three of the goals to record his first-ever hat-trick in the Italian top flight.

Osimhen, who has scored in every match since returning from an injury lay-off, got Napoli on their way today with a close-range finish in the fourth minute off a low cross from the impressive Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

The Nigeria international and the young Georgian combined again for the second goal 14 minutes later, Osimhen once again applying the finishing touch to Kvaratskhelia’s pass.

It was the turn of Kvaratskhelia to get on the scoresheet in the 36th minute as he rifled the ball into the roof of the net from Mario Ruiz’s pass.

Sassuolo created some good opportunities to get back into the contest in the second half as Napoli sat back, but the visitors could not pull one back at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

Osimhen, who was rested for the 3-0 Champions League victory over Rangers on Wednesday, rounded off the scoring in the 77th minute to bag his historic treble.

The 23-year-old has now scored seven goals in eight Serie A appearances this season and becomes the fourth African to score a hat-trick in a Serie A match after George Weah, Patrick M’boma and Keita Balde.
