Arsenal trounce Awoniyi’s Forest, back on top of Premier League

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table today with a 5-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners were back to winning ways after losing to PSV in a UEFA Europa League clash on Thursday and being overtaken in the Premier League by Manchester City yesterday.

Gabriel Martinelli, Reiss Nelson, Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard were all on the scoresheet for the league leaders.

The rout started in the fifth minute when Martinelli headed Arsenal ahead, but the promoted visitors did not concede again in the first half.

Bukayo Saka was forced off with injury in the 27th minute and replaced with Nelson, who went on to score twice.

Nelson doubled Arsenal’s lead four minutes into the second half with his first goal for the Gunners since November 2020.

He added his second and Arsenal’s third
three minutes later to take the game beyond Forest, who shocked Liverpool last week.

Partey netted the fourth goal in the 57th minute, before Odegaard rounded off the scoring with 12 minutes left on the clock.

Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi, Forest’s top scorer with three goals, started and lasted for 64 minutes, while his compatriot Emmanuel Dennis was a 56th minute substitute.

Forest are still bottom of the table after suffering their eighth defeat of the season.
