COUNTDOWN TO QATAR: Pogba set to miss World Cup with new injury

Paul Pogba has sustained a muscular injury in training in his attempt to recover from knee surgery and could miss the Qatar 2022 World Cup, reports in Italy have claimed.

The World Cup is scheduled for November 20 to December 18 across five cities in Qatar.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported today that the Juventus midfielder is increasingly unlikely to make the France squad for the global showpiece.

The 29-year-old has not made a competitive appearance for Juventus since returning to the Italian club from Manchester United as a free agent in the summer.

He tore the meniscus in his knee during pre-season training in the United States in July and opted for conservative therapy instead of orthodox treatment.

The alternative therapy did not work, and Pogba had to accept to undergo surgery to aid his recovery.

Pogba has since been back in training in Turin and working towards a full recovery so he could feature for Juventus this year and be ready for the World Cup.

However, La Gazzetta dello Sport has claimed that the midfielder has been diagnosed with a thigh injury caused by the long layoff, and will have to be sidelined for at least another 10 days.

France, who are in Group D for the World Cup with Australia, Denmark and Tunisia, will likely not risk taking an unfit Pogba to Qatar.

The world champions’ first fixture is against Australia in Al Wakrah on November 22, barely three weeks away.

Pogba has attended two World Cups, featuring for his country as they reached the quarter-finals in Brazil in 2014 and went all the way in Russia four years ago.
