Anthony Joshua won’t give up on Tyson Fury fight

Anthony Joshua believes there is still a possibility in the future of him fighting Tyson Fury even after two proposed bouts failed to materialise.

The Nigerian-Briton was supposed to fight the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion in 2021 and this year, but there were different stumbling blocks both times.

A court ruling stopped the first proposed megabout in March 2021 that would have unified the belts as Joshua was then the International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organisation champion.

The second time, just weeks ago, it was Fury’s unrealistic deadline for Joshua to sign the fight contract that scuppered the deal.

Still, 32-year-old Joshua is not giving up on the fight eventually taking place.

“It will happen. It will happen though. Same generation,” Joshua told boxing broadcaster DAZN.

“Aside from the entertainment side, just as two competitors, two fighters, he’s definitely a fighting man and what people fail to realise – like they say ‘the social media stuff is annoying’ but culturally speaking from Tyson Fury’s culture, the Gypsy culture. You’ve watched the documentaries on Netflix and stuff it’s embedded in his culture.

“What we see is ‘why is he on social media?’ I know from growing up and being around that community as well, so I know that’s just how they call out fights and stuff, it’s nothing personal but from my culture, we don’t really deal with stuff like that we’re a bit more lowkey and handle our business so that’s where there’s a culture clash.”

Joshua is confident 34-year-old Briton Fury also wants the fight, which would be the biggest in the United Kingdom in decades.

“But two fighting guys aside from tens of thousands of people coming out to an amazing stadium, he’s a fighting man and he wants to fight regardless of who’s watching, he just wants to fight and so do I,” he added.

Fury will battle Derek Chisora, whom he has beaten twice before, in their third fight on December 3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, while Joshua is scheduled to fight early next year.
