Carabao Cup: Man United outscore Villa in thriller, City to host Liverpool

Manchester United secured the last ticket to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup tonight with a 4-2 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

Teenage winger Alejandro Garnacho was outstanding for the hosts as they came from behind twice in the six-goal thriller.

After a bland first half, the contest took an exciting turn after the break, when all six goals were scored.

Villa, who had beaten United 3-1 in a Premier League clash at Villa Park on Unai Emery’s managerial debut on Sunday, took the lead again tonight, with Ollie Watkins firing low past Martin Dubravka in the host side’s goal in the 47th minute.

United responded almost instantly as fit-again Anthony Martial tapped home from point-blank range from Bruno Fernandes’ pass.

The visitors went back in front in the 61st minute when Diogo Dalot diverted a cross into his own net, but United then scored the next three goals.

Marcus Rashford levelled the scores in the 67th minute before the bright, direct Garnacho set up Fernandes and Scott McTominay for the two other goals.

The draw for the fourth round, which is also the round of 16, was held moments after the match.

The biggest tie of the round is between holders Liverpool and Premier League champions Manchester City, who have won the Carabao Cup in six of the last nine years.

City will be at home in the fixture, while Manchester United will host Burnley, coached by former City captain Vincent Kompany.

In other fourth round ties, Joe Aribo’s Southampton will welcome lower league side Lincoln City, with Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nottingham Forest away to Blackburn Rovers.
