Newcastle edge Chelsea, Iwobi’s Everton lose again, Iheanacho, Awoniyi benched

Chelsea extended their winless streak in the Premier League to five games tonight with a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United.

Joe Willock scored the only goal of the match in the 67th minute as Newcastle United continued their chase for a UEFA Champions League spot.

Eddie Howe’s side climbed up to third in the table, just two points off second-placed Manchester City.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have now gone five Premier League games without a win for the first time since 2012, and are eighth, eight points off the Champions League spots.

Earlier in the evening, Liverpool beat Southampton 3-1 to continue their resurgence.

Darwin Nunez scored his first brace for the Reds and Roberto Firmino also got on the scoresheet as they rose to sixth in the table.

Che Adams scored for Southampton, who brought Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo on for the last eight minutes.

Liverpool’s neighbours Everton were not so fortunate, losing at Bournemouth for the second time in four days.

Nigeria midfielder Alex Iwobi as usual played the full game for Everton as they lost 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium, with goals from Marc Tavernier, Keifer Moore and Jaidon Anthony.

It is the second heavy defeat Everton would suffer at the hands of Bournemouth in less than one week, following Tuesday night’s 4-1 loss in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Also in the Premier League today, Tottenham Hotspur recovered from going behind three times to beat Leeds United 4-3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Leeds United took the lead through Crysencio Summerville while Rodrigo Moreno scored twice after Harry Kane and then Ben Davies had pulled Spurs level.

Rodrigo Bentancur scored two late goals to hand Antonio Conte’s side the win that maintained their fourth position in the table.

At the London Stadium, James Maddison scored to give Leicester City a 2-0 win over West Ham United as the Foxes moved further away from the relegation zone.

Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was a second half substitute while his fellow Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho, who was not included in the squad for the friendly against Portugal, was left on the bench.

Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest beat Crystal Palace 1-0 to move off the bottom of the table.

Morgan Gibbs-White scored the game’s only goal early in the second half.

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi, another one not invited for the Portugal friendly, was an unused substitute while Emmanuel Dennis was not in the matchday squad.
