ZAMFARA: Bandits kidnap 44 persons in Kanwa community

AT least 44 persons have been kidnapped from the Kanwa community in Zurmi Local Government Area, Zamfara state.

The bandits, according to locals, assaulted the neighborhood at night and moved from house to house kidnapping people, primarily women and children.

After years of fatal raids on communities by the local government, there has been a calm in recent years, but kidnappings and pockets of attacks have returned, making the locals uneasy once more.

The notorious bandit leader Dankarami is suspected to be the one carrying out the mass kidnapping.

Dankarami has been frightening people in the Zamfara and neighboring Katsina states’ Zurmi-Birnin-Magaji-Jibia axis.

He stated that the robbers had not yet called the victims’ family to demand a ransom.

Meanwhile, residents of Moriki town have started making effort to gather “protection fee” after armed criminals demanded for N20 million from the community.

According to the locals, the criminal gang promised them that they would defend the neighborhood from attacks if the levy was provided, so they are mobilizing it from house to house to deliver to the armed men at Bello Turji’s camp.

The community of Moriki, which is situated along the Shinkafi-Kaura Namoda Road, has previously been the scene of a number of assaults, including the kidnapping of Government Girls Secondary School staff.
