‘It’s a shame’: Ronaldo’s sister lambasts Portugal’s Santos for benching her brother

Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister has hit out at Portugal head coach Fernando Santos for not starting her brother for the Qatar 2022 World Cup round of 16 clash against Switzerland last night.

Although Portugal won 6-1 with Ronaldo’s replacement Goncalo Ramos scoring a hat-trick, the sister still took to social media to condemn Santos’ decision to drop her superstar brother to the bench.

Elma Aveiro attacked the Portugal boss, claiming that he was ‘humiliating’ her brother, adding she did not know why Santos had left the 37-year-old out of his starting line-up, and that she could not understand it.

Aveiro used Instagram to lash out at the decision to leave out her brother, who started from the bench in a knockout game of a major international tournament for the first time since Euro 2008.

“Today we are all together, if you think it has to be like this I am here to see it,” she began, posting an image of the Portugal team before kick-off.

This was then followed by a screenshot of a reaction from one of her followers stating that they could not ‘believe’ the decision to leave out Ronaldo, with Aveiro claiming: “I don’t know why and I don’t understand it, but I’m sure we’ll have the answers from God later, he doesn’t fail, let’s see.”

Portugal posted their best performance of the tournament and scored five goals before Ronaldo was introduced in the 74th minute.

After the final whistle, Aveiro congratulated her country on their big victory, before resuming her criticism of Santos’ decision.

“Yes Ronaldo is not eternal, yes Ronaldo won’t play forever, unfortunately he doesn’t score goals now, he’s old, Portugal doesn’t need Ronaldo,” she continued sarcastically.

“We talked about what we heard, all that he did isn’t important, all that he did was forgotten.

“Now they ask for forgiveness and they don’t need him. I will register that and later we’ll talk.

“Rui Santos, what will he apologise for? Now we we can f*** who we want.

“It is a shame to humiliate a man who has given so much, but later I will see a lot more.”

When asked about the call to bench 37-year-old Ronaldo, Santos explained that it was for tactical reasons.

“This is something that is finished and solved,” he said.

“It is also important to look at the example of this player’s history, he is one of the best players in the world.”

Aveiro has often used social media to support her brother and criticise clubs and coaches if they have issues with Ronaldo.
