NSA inaugurates 11-man panel to probe oil theft

AN 11-person special investigative panel was launched yesterday by the National Security Advisor (NSA), Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (Retd), to look into oil theft in the nation’s Niger Delta.

The panel, comprising of retired top military brass and police officers as well as some administrators, has the Interim Administrator, Presidential Amnesty Programme, Maj.-Gen. Barry Ndiomu, as its chairman and David Attah as Secretary.

Monguno, who inaugurated the panel in Abuja, revealed that Nigeria was suffering from a massive loss of income that should have come from the sale of crude oil.

He pointed out that theft of crude oil and pipeline vandalism had caused a sharp drop in production.

NSA noted that the purpose of the Terms of Reference (ToRs) is to discover the facts surrounding the illegal insertion into the Trans-Escravos Pipeline (TEP) near the Yokri area in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

According to Aliyu Yerro, Permanent Secretary, Special Services, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the threat of crude oil theft, has had a significant impact on the country’s revenue growth.
