CAFCC: Rivers United avoid North Africans, to face ASEC in group phase

RIVERS United will not be meeting any North African clubs in the group phase of the CAF Confederation Cup, the draw has revealed.

Instead, the Nigeria Professional Football League champions will face clubs from Cote d’Ivoire, Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Clubs from Tunisia and Morocco eliminated all of Nigeria’s four representatives on the continent this season, with Rivers United initially falling to holders Wydad Athletic Club in the CAF Champions League, while Plateau United were beaten by Esperance in the same competition.

In the Confederation Cup, Remo Stars were beaten by Morocco’s FAR Rabat, as holders RS Berkane, also of Morocco, saw off Kwara United.

Rivers United dropped down to the Confederation Cup playoffs, where they beat Libya’s Al Nasser.

In today’s draw, the Nigerian champions were placed in Group B, where they will battle West African traditional heavyweights ASEC Mimosas of Cote d’Ivoire, Congo’s Diables Noirs and
DC Motema Pembe of DR Congo, another club with some continental pedigree.

In Group A, there are USMA of Algeria, Marumo Gallants of South Africa, Al Akhdar of Libya and FC Saint Eloi Lupopo of DR Congo.

Group C is made up of Pyramids FC of Egypt, Asko de Kara of Togo, Future FC also of Egypt and ASFAR of Morocco.

TP Mazembe of DR Congo, US Monastirienne of Tunisia, Young Africans of Tanzania and AS Real de Bamako of Mali are the clubs in Group D.

The group matches will be played between February 12 and April 2 next year, with the top two clubs from each of the four groups proceeding to the quarter-finals.
