Carabao Cup: Awoniyi scores as Forest, United advance, Charlton stun Brighton

TAIWO Awoniyi was on target tonight to help Nottingham Forest past Blackburn Rovers 4-1 into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The Super Eagles striker struck in the 79th minute to make it 3-1 for the visitors after Blackburn Rovers had cancelled an early lead.

It is Awoniyi’s first goal in the Carabao Cup this season but his fourth in all competitions in 16 appearances, following his three Premier League goals.

Brennan Johnson scored a brace for Forest, with Jesse Lingard adding the other goal against the Championship side.

In another Carabao Cup fourth round clash tonight, Manchester United eased past Championship leaders Burnley 2-0 at Old Trafford.

Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford, both of whom played at the Qatar 2022 World Cup which ended on Sunday, scored one goal in each half to take United past Burnley, who are coached by former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany.

There was a big upset in the other Carabao Cup fourth round clash on the night, as third-tier side Charlton Athletic defeated Premier League’s Brighton on penalties.

Full-time ended in a 0-0 draw and the match went straight to penalties.

Remarkably, the first three kicks all hit the post and missed target, and only four of the first 10 were converted, two for each side.

Home side Charlton eventually prevailed in sudden death, winning 4-3.

The quarter-final set will be completed tomorrow night when Manchester City host Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.
