Manchester City knock Liverpool out of Carabao Cup

MANCHESTER City have sent Liverpool packing from the Carabao Cup at the fourth round stage.

Pep Guardiola’s side beat the holders 3-2 in the topsy-turvy encounter at the Etihad Stadium tonight to book their spot in the quarter-finals.

City led twice and were pegged back on both occasions before Nathan Ake headed home the winning goal in an eventful second half.

Erling Haaland and Riyad Mahrez scored City’s other goals, while Fabio Carvalho and Mohamed Salah netted for the visitors.

Prolific Norwegian striker Haaland opened the scoring just 10 minutes in, latching on to Kevin De Bruyne’s cross for his 24th goal of the season in all competitions.

Liverpool were quickly back on level terms as Carvalho found himself free in the City box and swept home in the 20th minute.

City continued to dominate and create chances in the first half but there were no more goals as the game reached half-time.

The start to the second half was explosive though, with two goals being scored within three minutes of the restart.

Manchester City regained the lead superbly two minutes into the second period when Mahrez worked some space for himself in the Liverpool area before finding the top corner.

Liverpool responded instantly, equalising again within one minute as Salah converted from close range after a breakaway.

Undaunted, City found the winner two minutes before the hour mark as Ake headed in De Bruyne’s excellent delivery.

Although City had more scoring opportunities and much more shots on target, Liverpool would rue their missed chances, with Darwin Nunez failing to take any of the good ones that fell to him.
