Pele to spend Christmas in hospital as cancer worsens

BRAZILIAN football legend Pele will spend the Christmas holidays in hospital to continue treatment for his bowel cancer.

Reports overnight said his cancer has advanced and he requires care related to renal and cardiac dysfunction, and his family said he would remain in a Sao Paulo hospital.

The 82-year-old, who is regarded as the greatest footballer in history in some quarters, has been in the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo since late November as doctors reevaluate his treatment and treat a respiratory infection.

Pele has received regular medical treatment since a tumour was removed from his colon in September 2021.

“Our Christmas at home has been suspended,” his daughter Kely Nascimento said on Instagram, thanking people for their support.

“We decided with the doctors that, for various reasons, it would be better for us to stay here with all the care that this new family at Einstein gives us,” she said in the post.

After Argentina’s success in Sunday’s Qatar 2022 World Cup final, Pele posted a picture on social media of their team lifting the trophy, and hailed captain Lionel Messi, who scored twice on the night and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

The great man also commended France’s Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick in the final, and Morocco, who became the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals.

“Today, football continues to tell its story, as always, in an enthralling way,” he said. “What a gift it was to watch this spectacle of the future of our sport.”

Brazilian players had during their quarter-final clash with Croatia unveiled a big banner on the pitch with an image of the legend during his 1970 World Cup win.

Pele won the World Cup as a 17-year-old in 1958 and two more in 1962 and 1970.
