Carabao Cup: Aribo’s Southampton face Man City test as United draw Charlton

JOE Aribo and his Southampton teammates are up against favourites Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, according to the draw held late last night.

City defeated Liverpool 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium last night to complete the quarter-final set of England’s second cup competition.

The Saints scraped past lower league side Lincoln City on Tuesday night and face a tough task against Manchester City, who have won the competition four times in the last five seasons under Pep Guardiola.

Southampton will host the encounter at the St Mary’s Stadium hoping to reach the semi-finals and their first final since finishing as runners-up to Manchester United in 2017.

Manchester United themselves have the easiest tie on paper, having drawn the only non-Premier League side left in the competition, Charlton Athletic.

Erik ten Hag’s side, who saw off Burnley at Old Trafford in the last round on Wednesday night, will also be at home to the third-tier side, who upset Brighton on penalties in the last round.

In the other quarter-final ties, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho’s Leicester City will travel to Newcastle United, while Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nottingham Forest are home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The ties will be played in the week starting on January 9.
