Flying Eagles draw Senegal, hosts Egypt in U-20 AFCON ‘group of death’

NIGERIA’S Flying Eagles have been placed in the toughest group for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for Egypt early next year.

The draw for the tournament was held today, with the event billed for February 19 to March 11, 2023.

Seven-time champions Nigeria, who missed the 2021 edition, are in Group A with Mozambique, Senegal and hosts Egypt, in what is believed to be the toughest pool in the tournament.

Egypt are expected to be favourites as hosts, while Senegal’s football has witnessed a resurgence at all levels in the last two years.

Group B contains 2021 runners-up Uganda, along with Central African Republic, who reached the quarter-finals last time out, South Sudan and Congo.

Gambia, who finished third in Mauritania in 2021, are in Group C with Tunisia, the team they beat in the third-place match, as well as Republic of Benin and Zambia.

There are 12 teams in the tournament split into three groups of four teams each.

The top two teams from each group and the two best third-placed sides will advance to the quarter-finals.

The tournament also serves as the qualifying competition for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, with the semi-finalists earning tickets to the global event.
