Wolves make Cunha Premier League’s first mid-season signing

WOLVES have made the first move of the Premier League in the winter transfer window with the signing of Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid.

The Premier League’s bottom side announced the Brazilian forward’s arrival tonight, pending his formal signing on New Year’s Day, when the window officially opens.

“Matheus Cunha will become Julen Lopetegui’s first signing as Wolves head coach, joining on loan from 1st January, subject to work permit,” Wolves stated on their official website tonight.

“The Brazilian international flew to the UK and completed his medical earlier in the week, finalising a loan move which will automatically become a permanent deal until 2027, should certain clauses be triggered.”

The club described their new acquisition in glowing terms, highlighting his qualities.

“Quick and skilful in the attacking third, the 23-year-old joins having spent the past 18 months under Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid and has previously sampled both the Swiss Super League and Bundesliga,” the statement adds.

“Cunha was born in Brazil and was moulded into a footballer in South America, before a passage to Europe opened up through a move to Swiss side Sion, where he settled instantly as a teenager, finishing with 10 goals and eight assists in just 32 games.”

Cunha has also played in Germany with RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin, and he was in the Brazil squad that won the Tokyo Olympics men’s football gold in 2021.

He is Brazil U-23s’ record goal scorer with 21 goals in 23 games, during which time he top scored at the 2019 Toulon Tournament, which the Brazilians also won.

Cunha played for the senior Brazil squad during the qualifying campaign for the Qatar 2022 World Cup but was not included in the final squad for the tournament.

He has made 11 appearances in LaLiga this season, nine of them off the bench, and registered two assists.
