Liverpool edge out Wolves as Osimhen’s Napoli crash to Okereke’s Cremonese

LIVERPOOL claimed their first win of 2023 by beating Wolves 1-0 in their FA Cup third round replay at Molinuex tonight.

Harvey Elliott’s stunning strike proved enough to beat the tough hosts who had earned a 2-2 draw at Anfield in the first tie.

Elliott’s powerful long-range drive broke the deadlock with 13 minutes on the clock and Liverpool held off late Wolves pressure to continue the defence of the cup they won last season.

Liverpool will travel to Brighton in the fourth round on Sunday, January 29.

In another FA Cup replay tonight, Super Eagles centre-back Semi Ajayi continued his comeback from a long injury layoff with full-time action as his West Brom side saw off Chesterfield 4-0 at the Hawthorns.

Birmingham City, Bristol City and Luton Town also advanced tonight, all of them with 2-1 victories over Forest Green Rovers, Swansea City and Wigan Athletic respectively.

In Italy, Victor Osimhen made a late appearance as Serie A leaders Napoli were knocked out of the Coppa Italia by 10-man Cremonese, who had Leonardo Sernicola sent off in extra-time.

Serie A top scorer Osimhen was initially rested but was brought on 12 minutes into extra-time, with scores tied at 2-2.

There was no separating the sides and the contest went to penalties, with the Nigeria international converting Napoli’s fifth as they crashed out 5-4 in the shootout.

Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers was not in the matchday squad for Cremonese but his compatriot David Okereke started and featured for 65 minutes.

Okereke was replaced by Ghana international Felix Afena-Gyan, who went on to score Cremonese’s equaliser in the 87th minute.
