Osimhen scores spectacular goal as Napoli edge Roma to extend Serie A lead

VICTOR Osimhen kept up his brilliant scoring form tonight by netting a stunning goal in Napoli’s 2-1 victory over AS Roma at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

A first-half strike from the Super Eagles striker and a late goal from Giovanni Simeone gave Napoli the home win as they inched closer to their first Serie A title in 33 years.

Napoli top the league table with 53 points from 20 games, 13 ahead of second-placed Inter Milan, with Roma sixth on 37 points.

It could have gone differently for the league leaders when Kim Min-Jae came close to an own goal after 12 minutes as he misjudged goalkeeper Alex Meret’s position and headed the ball just wide of the open goal.

Serie A top scorer Osimhen then put Napoli ahead in spectacular fashion after 17 minutes when he chested down a cross inside the box to beat his marker, steadied the ball with his thigh and sent it crashing into the roof of the net with a magnificent volley,

The 24-year-old Nigeria international has netted 14 times in Serie A this season, two more than his compatriot Ademola Lookman of Atalanta.

Roma drew level in the 75th minute when substitute Stephan El Shaarawy evaded his marker after a cross into the Napoli box and bundled home from an acute angle.

Simeone, who came on with 14 minutes left on the clock, settled the contest with another fine finish.

He got the ball at the edge of the box, turned round and rifled it into the roof of the net left footed, sending the fans at Diego Armando Maradona Stadium into wild celebration.
