VICTOR Osimhen extended his lead at the top of the Serie A scoring charts by netting a brace in Napoli’s 3-0 win at Spezia.
The Super Eagles striker has now scored 16 goals in the Italian top flight this season, four more than his national team colleague Ademola Lookman, who is the second highest scorer in the league.
It is now Osimhen’s best campaign in terms of league goals in his career, which has seen him play in the German Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, Belgian Pro League with Charleroi and French Ligue 1 with Lille.
After having a goal disallowed, Osimhen responded with two in five minutes, heading home in the 68th minute and striking in the 73rd minute to seal the win.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia had given the visitors the lead just two minutes into the second half after a goalless first half in which Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti cut an angry and frustrated figure on the sidelines.
Napoli have now opened up a 16-point lead at the top of the table, with second-placed Inter Milan and fifth-placed AC Milan set to face off later tonight.
Meanwhile, in contrast to Osimhen’s soaring stock, his international teammate Calvin Bassey is no longer an automatic starter at Ajax.
The Super Eagles left-back was an unused substitute today as Ajax hammered Cambuur 5-0 away from home in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Bassey was one of the first names on the team sheet under Alfred Schreuder, but the manager was sacked on January 27 after a run of seven games without a win.
Interim manager Johnny Heitinga has shaken things up and Bassey was dropped from the starting line-up in his two games in charge.
The 23-year-old Nigeria defender played just 11 minutes last Sunday when Ajax defeated Excelsior 4-1 and spent the whole game on the bench today.
