U-20 AFCON: Flying Eagles stumble against Senegal

THE Flying Eagles failed in their first assignment at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations tonight, falling to defeat in their opening match.

The Nigerian lads lost 1-0 to Senegal in their Group A opener in Cairo to leave them bottom of the table after the first round of games.

Souleymane Faye scored Senegal’s goal five minutes before half-time, breaking the offside trap to slot home.

The early stages of the match were on an even level between the two West African sides, with chances at a premium.

Senegal grew more into the encounter and broke the deadlock when Faye netted with the half almost done.

Nigeria, who were free-scoring in their tune-up friendlies, failed to break down Senegal for the equaliser despite their best efforts.

The Flying Eagles’ hopes of a late leveller were dashed when forward Ahmed Abdullahi was sent off in stoppage time for a second booking.

The win took the Teranga Lions to the top of the group standings with three points, ahead of Egypt and Mozambique.

The hosts and Mozambique played out a 0-0 draw in the opening match of the tournament earlier today, leaving both joint-second in the group standings.

The Flying Eagles face Egypt on Wednesday in their next fixture at the Cairo International Stadium, after Mozambique and Senegal play at the same venue on the same day.
