U-20 AFCON: Nigeria coach Bosso sure of World Cup ticket despite Senegal defeat

FLYING Eagles head coach Ladan Bosso has no doubts his side will progress at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup even after their losing start in the continental competition.

The Nigerian team lost their opening game 1-0 to Senegal last night in Cairo and are bottom of Group A.

Sulaymane Faye scored five minutes before half-time to secure all three points for the Cubs to send them to the top of the group.

Seven-time champions Nigeria ended the encounter with 10 men after substitute Ahmed Abdullahi’s sending off for a dangerous challenge.

Despite the setback, Bosso insists his side will bounce back to advance in the tournament, which also serves as the qualifying competition for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia.

“We take advantage of tournaments like this in order to develop our level and work to fix our mistakes,” Bosso, who led the Flying Eagles to the U-20 World Cup in 2007, told CAF Online.

“In the end, I trust the team and their ability to qualify for the next round, and that we will achieve our biggest goal, which is to reach the World Cup,” said Bosso.

The Flying Eagles must get a result against hosts Egypt in Cairo on Wednesday in order to remain in the running for the World Cup slot, and Bosso admits it will not be easy.

“The next match is very difficult, especially since it will be against Egypt, the host country,” Bossu told reporters.

“Egypt’s the draw against Mozambique will make it more difficult because their desire to win will multiply.”

Egypt are also desperate for a win after drawing 0-0 with Mozambique in their opening fixture yesterday.
