RIVERS: APC Rep seeking reelection remanded to prison two days to elections

THE lawmaker representing Etche/Omuma federal district in the House of Representatives, Hon Ephraim Nwuzi, has been remanded to the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The Rivers State Police Command had filed a remand proceeding against him.

The federal lawmaker, who is also the All Progressives Congress candidate for Etche-Omuma Federal Constituency in the February 25, 2023 election, was charged with treasonable crime, conspiracy, instigating communal crises, and inciting violence by the police.

When the case was called up in court today, the accused’s counsel, Emenike Ebete, submitted an oral bail application.

The prosecution and the Investigative Police Officers in charge of the case, however, opposed the bail application, urging that Hon Nwuzi be held to allow for appropriate investigation and arraignment.

After hearing the arguments, Chief Magistrate O Amadi-Nna remanded Ephraim Nwuzi on the basis of the allegations.

Addressing to reporters outside the courtroom, the federal lawmaker’s counsel stated that the offenses preferred against his client were insufficient to warrant remand.

Ebete stated, “We have also submitted to the court that the offences disclosed in the particulars and affidavit attached to the alleged allegations were not sufficient enough for him to be remanded.

“The court in its wisdom held that the offences are gracious and that he should be remanded in prison custody until the 3rd of March 2023, pending when a charge will be preferred against him by the state.”

Reports reveal that Nwuzi was arrested this morning at his residence in Chokocho, Etche LGA by policemen, who allegedly broke into his apartment.
