A police sergeant is said to have died inside the home of Lanre Bankole, the former Commissioner of Police in Ogun State.
According to the source, the deceased police officer, Sgt Gbenga Onakomaya, died on Saturday at Bankole’s house in Kemta Housing Estate, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
It was also alleged that the deceased cop, who was on guard duty at the former Commissioner of Police’s home, was discovered dead at the police post the next morning as he could not be awakened up.
According to a source, the cop was transported to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, where the doctor on duty pronounced him dead.
The source added that “the family had been contacted and an autopsy will be carried out to confirm the real cause of the death.
When contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident.
He said there was no foul play in the death of the cop, adding that anybody can die in their sleep.
Oyeyemi said, “a police officer was on duty, he slept and couldn’t wake up in the morning.
“It is a case of sudden and unnatural death. It is not something that is beyond the ordinary. It is not something that has not happened before. Anybody can be sick and die anywhere, even in your house, you can be sick and… somebody can be sick and can die anywhere.”
When asked if the man was not poisoned, Oyeyemi said the police have ordered an autopsy to unravel whatever that might have happened.”
The former commissioner was recently transferred from the Ogun State police command and was replaced by former Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, a month ago.
The Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, had deployed Bankole to head the Force Criminal Investigations Department X-Squad at its Annex in Lagos State.
