Osimhen wins Italian sports award, open to Premier League move ‘one day’

VICTOR Osimhen was presented with the Foreign Press Sports Award today in Italy for being the best non-Italian athlete in the country in 2022.

The Nigeria international was accompanied to receive the award by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, who has often declared that his prolific striker is not for sale.

At the press conference for the award, the Super Eagles star was asked about his future, amid serious interest from the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.

“Playing in one of the best leagues in the world is great for me,” the 24-year-old said.

“I know people consider the Premier League to be the most important league in the world, but for now I don’t think about it, I don’t know what will happen.

“I’m working hard and I’m happy to play in Naples in one of the most important leagues in the world. I give my all to achieve my goals and maybe play in the Premier League one day, but I’m enjoying the moment.

“For me, Serie A remains a great challenge, with different characteristics from other leagues and with fans who always make you feel their support. In this aspect, for me it’s the best league.”

Osimhen has scored 19 Serie A goals this season as Napoli close in on their first Scudetto since Diego Maradona inspired them to the top flight title in 1990, and the Nigerian is loving life in Naples.

“When you arrive in Naples, as a footballer, you fall in love with football even more,” he noted. “Because people dedicate their lives to football, to cheering on the city’s team and this pushes me to have a mission to accomplish for these people.

“They make me very happy and I want to give them something unforgettable. I arrived in 2020, they immediately showed me great love and I want to repay them on the pitch. Everyone here is very good, from the president to the coach, up to the players. We all have the opportunity to become icons of this city.”
