Chelsea deserve UCL quarter-final spot — Dortmund’s Terzic, Can

BORUSSIA Dortmund manager Edin Terzic and midfield star Emre Can have both conceded that Chelsea were good value for the victory over their side in the UEFA Champions League.

Chelsea beat Dortmund 2-0 last night at Stamford Bridge to overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit in their round of 16 tie and advance to the quarter-finals.

It was the first defeat for the German side in 2023 after they had secured 10 straight wins in all competitions, and Terzic felt Chelsea edged the tie.

“We have to say, over the course of two games, Chelsea deserve to go through,” he told UEFA.com.

“But we would have deserved to go through too as it was two games that were very evenly-matched.”

Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz scored in either half to send the 2021 champions through to the quarter-finals, and Can explained that Chelsea’s early pressure did the damage.

“Chelsea had to come at us and they did it well, especially in the first half,” the Germany international said.

“In the second half we had a couple of good chances, but we also didn’t create enough from open play and we have to be honest about that.”

Interestingly, Chelsea had failed to win any of their previous five UEFA club competition fixtures against German opposition, while Dortmund have now lost all of their last six European away games against English opponents.
