MANCHESTER UNITED City manager Pep Guardiola has made a bizarre admission of how he will never consider himself a success at the club no matter what he achieves because of superstar actress Julia Roberts’ preference for Manchester United.
Guardiola led City to a record 7-0 victory over RB Leipzig last night to steer City to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
During his post-match press conference, a reporter asked Guardiola how he felt about City consistently reaching the competition’s quarter-finals more than any other side in Europe in recent years.
The Spaniard’s response left everyone present bemused and amused, with his reference to the Hollywood great and her love for City’s neighbours Manchester United.
“I’m a failure in Champions League. I’m going to say a secret. So whatever happens in this year’s Champions League, even if we win this Champions League three times in a row, I’ll be a failure,” Guardiola said.
“I’m going to tell you something. I have three heroes in life: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Julia Roberts.
“Julia Roberts came to England a few years ago in the period when Manchester United were not good; we were better and she came to Manchester United, she didn’t come to see us.
“Even if I win the Champions League, it cannot be compared to Julia Roberts not coming to see us.
“She didn’t come to see us. Even if I win the Champions League, I will be a failure because of the disappointment of Julia Roberts going to United.”
Roberts, 55, shot to global prominence in 1990 when she starred in the blockbuster romantic comedy ‘Pretty Woman’ and has remained a Hollywood superstar ever since, starring in other huge box office hits including ‘The Pelican Brief’, ‘Runaway Bride’, ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ and ‘Ocean’s Twelve’.
She has visited Old Trafford with her family and taken pictures on the pitch, as well as appeared at Manchester United games on tour in the United States of America.
