Appeal Court rejects Abba Kyari’s associate’s request for bail

THE Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed an appeal by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sunday Ubua, seeking bail.

Ubua is an associate of suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari, both of whom are being prosecuted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for illegal drug dealings and other offenses.

A three-member panel of the appellate court upheld Justice Nwite’s ruling today which stated that Ubua’s appeal was without merit.

The March 28 judgment denied Ubua’s bail application, stating that the prosecution provided sufficient evidence to the court to justify the rejection of the bail application.

In the lead judgment, Justice Stephen Adah held that the appellant had not presented any new materials to the court to justify the court’s departure from the earlier decision on the issue by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Ubua is on trial alongside Kyari and three other former members of the Nigeria Police Force’s Intelligence Response Team, Force Investigation and Intelligence Department on drug-related charges and attempting to tamper with evidence.
