AN auto dealer, Ikechukwu Ogbonna, 37, aka IVD, was arraigned before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja yesterday for the alleged manslaughter of his late wife Abimbola, who died in a fire at their residence in the state’s Lekki area.
The defendant was arraigned on one count of involuntary manslaughter in suit No. LD/21055C/23 filed by the Lagos State Government against him.
Adeshola Bello, the prosecuting counsel, told the court that there was a mix-up in the date the alleged offence was committed.
“We have on record October 10 but the date was October 12,” Bello said.
He asked the court to grant the prosecution permission to make an amendment, which the court did.
According to Bello, the alleged offense violated Section 229 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.
However, when arraigned before Modupe Nicole-Clay, Ogbonna pleaded not guilty to the charge leveled against him.
Victor Ogunde, SAN, the defendant’s defense counsel, requested bail for him.
The judge asked why he was bringing up a bail application for the defendant despite the fact that the defendant had been on bail since March 1.
The defense attorney responded that the case against his client had a different charge number.
As a result, Justice Nicole-Clay adjourned the case until March 30, May 24 and 25, 2023, for the start of trial.
Recall that the media went agog when the news of Abimbola’s passing on October 12, 2022, became public knowledge.
