THE Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, has issued a warning stating that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) will not tolerate any attempt to incite violence throughout the nation, particularly in light of the recently concluded general elections.
IGP Alkali Baba issued the warning today in a meeting with the commissioners of police from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, as well as other senior officers.
He asserted that all electoral irregularities during the general elections in 2023 are being investigated by the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission and that all complaints and crimes will be addressed.
Speaking further, the police chief revealed that during the general elections in 2023, members of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) had detained over 700 offenders for violating electoral laws.
He added that the precise number of people arrested at this time is 781.
IGP Alkali Baba provided additional information about the arrest, stating that 203 arrests were made as a result of the 185 cases of electoral infractions that were reported during the presidential election.
According to the police chief, 304 electoral violations for the governorship and state assembly elections were noted, and 578 offenders were taken into custody.
The IGP added that in light of threats to national security posed by some political actors who, in his opinion, are attempting to undermine the peace of the nation after the elections, a meeting with the Commissioners and other force leaders has become essential.
He urged Nigerians to work toward unity rather than condemning political actors who use ethnic profiling to further their own interests.
