MANCHESTER United were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League tonight after a 3-0 defeat to Sevilla in Spain in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.
Sevilla advanced to the semi-finals 5-2 on aggregate having drawn 2-2 at Old Trafford last week.
United, who conceded two late own goals in the first leg, continued with their error-ridden performance tonight with two gifted goals for their hosts.
Morocco striker Youssef En-Nesyri scored twice, both of the from embarrassing errors.
The first goal came in the eighth minute when David De Gea and Harry Maguire tried to play out from the back only to lose the ball to Erik Lamela, who passed to El-Nesyri for a simple tap-in.
The Atlas Lions Qatar 2022 World Cup star then wrapped up the scoring with nine minutes left on the clock, guiding the ball home after De Gea failed to make a simple clearance from a long ball.
In between El-Nesyri’s goals, Loic Balde scored from a corner two minutes into the second half as Erik ten Hag’s side disintegrated.
Manchester United have now lost all three ties against Sevilla in European competition, twice in the Europa League and once in the Champions League.
Also tonight in the Europa League, Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma overcame Feyenoord 4-1 on the night to advance 4-2 on aggregate.
With the first leg in The Netherlands ending 1-0 in Feyenoord’s favour, Roma levelled the tie through Leonardo Spinazzola on the hour mark but Igor Paixao made it 1-1 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate with 10 minutes left to play.
Roma had to score to remain in the contest and they did in the 89th minute through Paolo Dybala to take it to extra-time.
The hosts lifted the Stadio Olimpico with two strikes in extra-time from Stephan El-Sharaawy and Lorenzo Pellegrini to send Roma past the side they beat in the inaugural Conference League final last season.
Juventus joined their Italian rivals in the semi-finals with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Sporting Lisbon.
Adrien Rabiot opened the scoring for the Old Lady in Lisbon in the ninth minute but Marcus Edwards equalised for the hosts from the penalty spot in the 20th minute.
Sporting needed another goal to level the tie on aggregate as Juventus had won the first leg 1-0, but it was not forthcoming and the Serie A giants progressed to the semi-finals.
In the fourth Europa League clash of the night, Bayer Leverkusen beat their hosts Union St Gilloise 4-1 to qualify for the semi-finals 5-2 on aggregate.
Union St Gilloise’s Nigerian striker Victor Boniface started the match and lasted for 81 minutes as their European dreams went up in smoke.
