Buhari to attend maritime security meeting in Ghana Tuesday

PRESIDENT Buhari will be leaving Abuja for Accra today, Tuesday, for the 3rd Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Gulf of Guinea Commission, hosted by Ghanaian, Nana Akuffo-Ado.

This was revealed by his spokesperson, Femi Adesina this evening “Buhari will participate and deliver remarks at the high-level discussion on strategies for strengthening peace and security in the fight against maritime-related crimes in the region”. This will be the president’s sixth international trip in 2023.

“Maritime Security, President Buhari to Attend Gulf of Guinea Heads of State and Government in Ghana,” reads the statement.

In his position as the Assembly’s immediate past Chair, Buhari had advocated for coordinated efforts by the region’s member states, the Economic Community of Central African States, the Economic Community of West African States, the Gulf of Guinea Commission, and their allies to combat and prevent piracy.

The Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Act, 2019, was passed by Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly in June of this year with the intention of preventing and suppressing piracy, armed robbery, and other illegal acts against ships.

Buhari will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, the National Security Adviser, Maj-Gen Babagana Monguno (retd.), the Director General, National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar, among other government officials.
