MANCHESTER City increased their gap over Arsenal at the top of the English Premier League table with a nervy 2-1 victory over Leeds United at the Etihad Stadium today.
Ilkay Gundogan scored both goals for the champions as they extended their lead over the Gunners to four points, with both teams having played 34 matches.
Rodrigo pulled one back for Leeds United late on to ensure a nervy ending for City, who missed a penalty moments before the strike.
Algeria forward Riyad Mahrez assisted both goals for Gundogan in the 19th and 27th minutes, and City could have made it 3-0 in the 34th minute but the Germany midfielder missed a penalty in the 84th minute.
Leeds scored a minute later to rattle Pep Guardiola’s side but the visitors could not earn a point in Sam Allardyce’s first game in charge as they stay in 17th place, above the relegation zone on goal difference.
Also today, Chelsea defeated Bournemouth 3-1 at the Vitality Stadium to secure their first victory under Frank Lampard.
Conor Gallagher, Benoit Badiashile and substitute Joao Felix struck for the Blues as they ended a run of six straight defeats under Lampard.
Chelsea took the lead in the ninth minute with Gallagher’s header but the hosts were back level 12 minutes later through Matias Vina.
Lampard’s side netted two late goals via Badiashile in the 82nd minute and Felix six minutes later to move above Crystal Palace into 11th spot.
Despite the defeat, Bournemouth look safe for this season, as they are 14th, nine points clear of the drop zone.
At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Harry Kane surpassed Wayne Rooney to become the second all-time top scorer in the Premier League with his goal in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.
Kane’s goal was his 209th in the Premier League, one more than Wayne Rooney, with Alan Shearer on top with 260.
Spurs are sixth in the table, while Palace are 12th.
In the other Premier League clash today, Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Aston Villa 1-0 at Molinuex to move up to 13th, 10 points clear of trouble, with the visitors in eighth place.
