Former Italy and Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero has explained why he believes Victor Osimhen is a special player and why Napoli needed the Nigerian to win the Serie A title.
Super Eagles striker Osimhen has led the Napoli frontline brilliantly this season, scoring a league-high 22 goals as they won their first Serie A title in 33 years.
The Nigeria international also scored the goal that secured the Scudetto in Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Udinese to beat
the record of 21 goals set by former Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto’o for an African player in an Italian top flight campaign.
“What more can be said about Osimhen, this extraordinary player, a symbol of the modern striker?” Del Piero, a Juventus and Italy great, told Sky Sport Italia.
“He has managed to improve during the season. He has some particular characteristics that I love, such as courage, determination, the hunger to score and to do well.
“It doesn’t matter whether he misses three chances or scores three goals, because he will start the very next move with the same level of determination.”
Del Piero, who won the Serie A six times with Juventus as well as the 2006 World Cup with Italy, suggested that Napoli would not have won the Scudetto without the impact of Osimhen and head coach Luciano Spalletti.
“He has improved during the season following Spalletti’s guidance and the way Napoli play is good for him too,” the 48-year-old Del Piero, who won the 2006 UEFA Champions League with Juventus, added.
“I must say that Napoli with Osimhen is a team for the title, whereas without him it becomes more difficult.
“I think that makes clear the importance of a player who has won everyone over.”
