INTER Milan legend and current vice-president Javier Zanetti has declared that he does not want Real Madrid to reach the UEFA Champions League final.
The Italian side advanced to the final last night after a 1-0 victory over local rivals AC Milan to win the semi-final tie 3-0 on aggregate.
They will face the winners of the second semi-final between Manchester City and Real Madrid, who meet in the second leg in Manchester tonight after the first leg ended 1-1 in Madrid last week.
Zanetti, who was part of Inter Milan’s Champions League success in 2010, their last continental triumph, stated his preference after last night’s win.
“I would like to avoid Real Madrid because the competition seems made for them,” Zanetti said in a post-match interview.
Real Madrid are the most successful club in the competition with 14 titles and are the defending champions, while Manchester City are yet to win it, having lost their only final to Chelsea in 2001.
Former Argentina full-back Zanetti is nonetheless proud of how far Inter have come this season.
“It is a great emotion. The group deserved to play in a Champions League final after 13 years,” he told Sky Italia.
“We are waiting to know the name of our opponents, but what this group has done is very important.
“The most important thing is to get there; it was a difficult path.”
