CAF applauds Flying Eagles over U-20 World Cup progress

THE Confederation of African Football has hailed the Flying Eagles for advancing to the round of 16 of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina.

The Nigerians defeated Italy 2-0 in Mendoza last night to become the first team in the competition to reach the knockout rounds.

The win took Nigeria’s tally to six points from two games and leadership of Group D, following Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Dominican Republic.

Salim Fago and Daniel Sunday struck in the second half to see the Flying Eagles past Italy, who had beaten five-time champions Brazil 3-2 in their opening game on Sunday.

“The knockout stages await,” CAF tweeted today, adding an ‘applause’ emoji.

“What a win for Nigeria last night in the #U20WC that sealed their place in the round of 16.

“Keep soaring, Eagles.”

The Flying Eagles top Group D with six points, followed by Brazil on three after the South Americans pounded Dominican Republic 6-0 last night.

Italy are third with three points, behind Brazil on goal difference, while Dominican Republic are bottom with no points.

The final group standings will be decided on Saturday when Nigeria face Brazil and Italy play Dominican Republic.
