D’Tigress to defend FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title in Rwanda

THE 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship will be held in Rwanda, with Nigeria’s D’Tigress attending as defending champions.

World basketball ruling body FIBA confirmed today that the 27th edition of tournament will be held in the East African country from July 28 to August 6.

D’Tigress won the competition, which is the top women’s basketball tournament in Africa, in Yaounde, Cameroon in 2021, beating Mali in the final to complete a rare ‘three-peat’.

It was the Nigerian ladies’ third straight title after they won it in Mali in 2017 and Senegal in 2019.

D’Tigress will be aiming for a fourth consecutive title to equal Senegal’s historic feat, which they achieved between 1974 and 1981.

Nigeria have qualified automatically for the 2023 edition as defending champions, with Mali, Cameroon and Senegal also through for finishing second, third and fourth in the 2021 tournament.

The FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship is staged every two years and features the top 12 national teams on the continent.
