Haaland scoops historic Premier League awards double

ERLING Haaland has become the first person ever to win both the Premier League Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards after a record-breaking campaign.

The 22-year-old striker fired Manchester City to their third straight Premier League title, scoring 36 goals to break the record of 34 for a single season set by Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer in 42-match Premier League campaigns.

The Norwegian has become the third successive Manchester City player, and fourth overall, to claim the Player of the Season prize, after Kevin De Bruyne in 2019/2020 and 2021/2022, while Ruben Dias took the honour in 2020/21. Vincent Kompany was the first, in 2011/12.

Haaland won the Player of the Season award ahead of seven other nominees: De Bruyne, Harry Kane, Martin Odegaard, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Kieran Trippier.

Haaland also beat Arsenal’s Saka, Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli as well as Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak and Sven Botman, and Brighton’s Moises Caicedo to win the Young Player of the Season award, becoming the first player in Premier League history to claim both awards in the same campaign.

“I am honoured to have become the first player to win both awards in the same season – thank you to everyone who voted for me,” Haaland told Man City’s official website.

“It has been an incredible first season in the Premier League and lifting the Trophy last weekend in front of our fans at the Etihad was a very special moment for me.

“These awards would not have been possible without my amazing team-mates, the manager and all of the staff at the club who help me perform on the pitch. Now we have two more finals to go and we want to finish the season strong.”

In winning the Young Player prize, Haaland makes it a third consecutive season in which a Manchester City star has claimed it. Phil Foden was the winner in each of the previous two campaigns.

The award was introduced in 2018/2019, when it was won by Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, and is given to the best player aged 23 or under at the start of the season.

Haaland received the most combined votes from the public and a Premier League panel.
