U-20 World Cup: R16-bound Flying Eagles fail to break Brazil jinx

THE Flying Eagles lost for the first time at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup, going down to Brazil 2-0 in La Plata tonight.

Jean Pedroso and Marquinhos struck for the Brazilians as they shot to the top of Group D and continued their dominance over the Flying Eagles.

Nigeria, who had already booked their round of 16 ticket before tonight with two wins out of two games, matched the Brazilians stride for stride for most of the first half.

Five-time champions Brazil, who have never lost to Nigeria at this level, scored their two goals late in the first half, Pedroso netting in the 43rd minute and Marquinhos on the stroke of half-time following a counter-attack.

The Flying Eagles responded after the break with head coach Ladan Bosso ringing the changes but, despite hitting the post twice and forcing a superb save from the Brazil goalkeeper, they could not pull a goal back.

In the other match of the group, which went on simultaneously with the Nigeria versus Brazil clash, Italy defeated Dominican Republic 3-0.

Brazil, Italy and Nigeria all finished on six points, with only goal difference separating them.

Brazil finished as the group winners, with Italy second and Nigeria third, but all are through to the round of 16, the Flying Eagles as one of the best third-placed finishers in this tournament.

The Flying Eagles will face either the United States of America or Argentina in the round of 16.
