TWO of Nigeria’s traditional clubs, Bendel Insurance of Benin City and Rangers of Enugu, will face each other in this year’s Federation Cup final.
The two sides advanced to the final after victories over Warri Wolves and Plateau United respectively in today’s semi-finals.
Bendel Insurance booked their spot in the final after defeating Warri Wolves 3-2 on penalties.
The closely fought encounter at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos had to go to a penalty shootout after both sides were unable to break the deadlock in regulation time and it ended 0-0.
In the other semi-final at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Rangers beat Plateau United 1-0, with striker Godwin Obaje converting a 90th minute penalty against his former club.
This year’s final will be the third between both sides. Insurance defeated Rangers in the 1978 final, while the Flying Antelopes gained revenge in 1981.
Insurance are on course for a unique Nigeria Premier Football League and Federation Cup double having qualified for the championship playoffs for the top flight title.
The Benin Arsenal are remarkably unbeaten in all competitions this season as they led Group A of the abridged NPFL campaign without losing any of their 18 fixtures.
