THE men’s and women’s finals of this year’s NFF-Tingo Federation Cup will be played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State on Thursday, June 15, the Nigeria Football Federation has announced.
The the women’s final between holders Bayelsa Queens and multiple-time winners Rivers Angels will kick off proceedings from 2pm.
The men’s final, between old rivals Bendel Insurance of Benin and Rangers of Enugu, also met in the 1978 decider, will follow from 5pm.
The winners of the men’s final will secure a ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup, and both Insurance and Rangers have not played continental football for years.
When the two traditional clubs met in the 1978 final, underdogs ‘Benin Arsenal’ thrashed Rangers 3-0 at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Three years later, the Flying Antelopes gained their revenge as they defeated Insurance 2-0 in the final with goals from Okwuchukwu Obiora and Ifeanyi Onyedika.
Insurance, who have gone a remarkable 21 games unbeaten, can win a rare Nigeria Premier Football League and Federation Cup double this season as they are also in the championship play-offs for the league title going on in Lagos.
Rangers are looking for their first piece of silverware since their triumph in the NPFL in 2016.
