KYLIAN Mbappe has told Paris St Germain he will not stay at the club beyond the end of next season, according to a report in France.
The forward has an option for a one-year extension in his contract when it expires next June, but he has notified the French champions he will not take it up, L’Equipe reported last night.
Additional reports today claimed that the French moneybags are also willing to let him leave this summer provided the right offer that meets their valuation comes, as the club do not want him to leave on a free transfer next year.
Mbappe, who helped France win the World Cup in 2018 and was top scorer as they finished as runners-up to Argentina in Qatar last year, reportedly confirmed his decision in a letter to the club.
The forward would be free to negotiate and sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club from January if he decides to see out the remaining year of his deal at PSG.
The perennial Ligue 1 champions, owned by Qatar Sports Investments, have already let go of seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi on a free transfer at the end of his two-year contract. He had moved to Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami.
Mbappe, 24, was believed to have been on the verge of joining Real Madrid last season but he was persuaded to stay and sign a contract extension with PSG.
The 24-year-old has long been a target for Real Madrid who had a reported €200 million bid rejected in 2021.
Mbappe joined PSG from AS Monaco in 2017 in a deal reported to be around €180m, making him the world’s second-most expensive signing after Neymar, who joined them from Barcelona for €222m.
The France forward has won five Ligue 1 titles with PSG and became the club’s all-time top scorer after netting 41 goals in 43 games in all competitions last season.
