RIVERS United and Katsina United earned the last two slots in the Naija Super 8 finals today in Eket, Akwa Ibom State after slim victories over Bendel Insurance and Kano Pillars.
Deposed Nigeria Premier Football League champions Rivers United put themselves in the position of claiming at least a trophy this season with a thrilling 3-2 win over Federation Cup winners Bendel Insurance at the Eket Stadium to emerge as the South South representatives in the Naija Super 8 tournament billed for Lagos in July.
Morice Chukwu struck late to hand victory to the Pride of Rivers after the Benin Arsenal had come back twice.
Liberian star Albert Korvah scored twice for Rivers United, with Mongara Dede netting Bendel Insurance’s first equaliser and Okon Ini Obong drawing the Benin City side level again with 20 minutes left.
In the first match of the day, multiple-times NPFL champions Kano Pillars were beaten 1-0 by Katsina United in the North West play-off for the tournament, with Samson Soulley scoring the only goal of the match.
The six representatives of the geopolitical zones have now all emerged, while two wildcards will be added to the teams on Thursday during the draw for the competition to complete the Naija Super 8.
The representatives are Lobi Stars (North Central), Remo Stars (South West), Yobe Desert Stars (North East), Enyimba (South East), Katsina United (North West) and Rivers United (South South).
