Brighton set to launch bid for Calvin Bassey, make first contacts

BRIGHTON are interested in Calvin Bassey and are preparing to make a bid in the coming days.

The Super Eagles defender is currently with Ajax, who he joined last season from Rangers for €23m.

The 23-year-old Nigeria international has caught the attention of Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Bassey is seen as a valuable addition to the side that finished sixth in the Premier League last season and qualified for the UEFA Europa League for the first time in their history.

According to European football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Brighton have already made contacts with Bassey’s representatives and are awaiting Ajax’s valuation before making a formal bid.

De Zerbi turned to Bassey after Chelsea refused to sell Levi Colwill, who excelled on loan at Brighton last season.

Despite getting criticism for some of his performances, Bassey still made 39 appearances in all competitions for Ajax last season, scoring one goal and making five assists.

He can play as a centre-back and left-back with equal competence, and his Ajax contract ends in 2027.
