Sporting Lagos edge Remo Stars to clinch Naija Super 8

SPORTING Lagos defeated Remo Stars 4-2 on penalties to win the inaugural Naija Super 8 title at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos tonight.

Scores stood at 1-1 at full-time and the final, played before a full house at the 10,000-capacity stadium, went straight to a shootout.

Sporting Lagos players were ruthless from 12 yards, converting all their four kicks, while Remo Stars missed twice.

The Lagos side, recently promoted to the Nigeria Premier Football League from the second-tier Nigeria National League, took the lead early in the second half.

Nine minutes after the restart, Aliu Salawudeen slotted home the rebound off Jonathan Alukwu’s header which Remo Stars goalkeeper Kayode Bankole had initially saved.

Sporting Lagos had more chances to extend their advantage over Remo Stars, but it was the NPFL runners-up who scored the next goal.

Remo Stars equalised three minutes into eight added-on minutes, Adams Olamilekan netting off an assist from fellow substitute Sikiru Alimi.

Goalkeeper Christian Nwoke emerged as the hero for Sporting Lagos as he saved two of Remo Stars’ penalties.

The final was spiced up with performances from star artistes Seyi Vibez and Portable to thrill the capacity crowd.
