Bayer Leverkusen sign Nigeria’s Boniface from Union St-Gilloise

NIGERIAN forward Victor Boniface has left Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise to join Bayer Leverkusen, the German side confirmed tonight.

The 22-year-old has signed a five-year contract at the Bundesliga club, costing around €20 million in transfer fee.

“He will help us improve the quality of our squad for the large number of games in the Bundesliga, DFB Cup and the Europa League,” Leverkusen sporting managing director Simon Rolfes said.

The striker joined Union St Gilloise from Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt for €2m last August and emerged as one of the Belgian club’s top performers.

Boniface registered 17 goals and 12 assists in 51 appearances in all competitions as Union St-Gilloise finished third in Belgium and reached the Europa League quarter-finals, where they incidentally lost to Bayer Leverkusen.

He was the joint-top scorer in last season’s Europa League with six goals, the same as Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.

Leverkusen finished in sixth place in the league and will play in the Europa League group stage.
