‘We’re proud of you’: Tinubu hails history-making AfroBasket champions D’Tigress

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has congratulated D’Tigress on their 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship triumph.

The Nigerian team defeated Senegal 84-74 in the tournament’s final in Kigali, Rwanda last night to clinch the title for the fourth consecutive time.

They thus became only the second team in history to win four straight Women’s AfroBasket titles after Senegal, who did the same between 1974 and 1981.

“I congratulate our very own D’Tigress for a well-deserved fourth consecutive AfroBasket Women Championship. We are proud of you,” Tinubu posted on Twitter to acknowledge the team’s triumph.

D’Tigress won the title in 2017, 2019, 2021 and now 2023, taking their total to six, still well short of Senegal’s record 12.

Remarkably, D’Tigress head coach Rena Wakama made personal history of her own by becoming the first female head coach to win the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title, despite this being her first major assignment with the team.
