THE triumphant Nigerian team that just won the Women’s AfroBasket Championship, D’Tigress, have taken the trophy to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
D’Tigress defeated Senegal 84-74 in Kigali, Rwanda on Saturday to clinch Africa’s biggest women’s basketball trophy for the fourth straight time.
Nigeria made history by becoming only the second country to win the title four times back-to-back, incidentally after Senegal.
While D’Tigress achieved their remarkable feat between 2017 and 2023, Senegal did theirs from 1974 to 1981.
The ladies pulled off the historic achievement on Saturday, and arrived back home yesterday.
Today, they were in Abuja as guests of the First Lady, and presented her with the shiny piece of silverware.
“We are incredibly grateful for the warm reception by our First Lady, H.E. Sen. Remi Tinubu earlier today. Her Excellency’s kind words about our team effort and commitment to excellence are humbling,” the team tweeted today after the reception.
“Special thanks also to wife of the VP, H.E. Nana Kashim Shettima, and wife of the Senate President, H.E. Uloma Akpabio.
“We hope that our achievements serve as an inspiration to everyone, particularly young girls, encouraging them to chase their dreams with determination.
“It is an honour to represent one’s own country. We remain committed to upholding our values as a team and making Nigeria proud on and off the court.”
The First Lady praised the resilience of the team and commended them for representing the country with commitment and dedication.
